Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump counts on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s circulated around your home. This liquid is found within the coils of a cooling system, but one of the most common refrigerants that’s been in use for many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being gradually eliminated because of environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, the production of R-22 will end all together. Introducing R-410A R-410A is EPA-recognized, chlorine-free and ozone-friendly. R-410A will keep your home cool without harming the environment. What’s more, Lennox’s highest efficiency systems are made to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system operate efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and improved dehumidification, so you’ll stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Main Heating & Cooling, Inc. in Utica, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If you have a system that was made prior to 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is hard to find. Some manufacturers sell alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
