When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, most of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies could notice increased symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
